AIADMK won 47 (down from 66 in 2021). Of those 47, only 22 were retentions from 2021 — the rest are new ACs they captured from DMK or smaller parties. EPS won his own seat by 98,110 — by far the largest margin in TN 2026.

Net: AIADMK lost 19 seats. The arithmetic: lost 26 to TVK and 15 to DMK (41 out) ; gained 22 from DMK and ~18 from others. The TVK absorption was the structural challenge AIADMK couldn't counter.

The clearest "personal incumbency" case in TN 2026
EPS won by 98,110 — the largest margin in the entire state. This is roughly 4× the TVK statewide winning median margin. The combination of:
- AIADMK leader personal brand
- Salem-Edappadi long-time constituency service
- Voter recognition deeper than party loyalty
… insulated him from the TVK wave. The contrast with TVK's wave is sharpest in Edappadi.
AIADMK's biggest victories (other than Edappadi) ​
The top AIADMK wins by margin (excluding EPS):
- AC 179 Viralimalai (Pudukkottai district) — AIADMK candidate won by 62,073
- (other AIADMK top-10 wins were in mid-southern TN)
EPS's 98K margin is so far above the AIADMK distribution that it's an outlier even among AIADMK winners.
AIADMK's closest victories ​
From the close-margin list, AIADMK was the winner in:
- AC 229 Kanniyakumari — by 214 votes (over DMK)
- AC 76 Tirukkoyilur — by 285 (over TVK; one of two non-TVK ACs)
- AC 95 Paramathi-Velur — by 308
- AC 127 Palani — by 693
These narrow AIADMK wins were typically AC where TVK's wave was muted enough to give the historic AIADMK base a margin.
AIADMK as NDA partner ​
AIADMK's 2026 alliance:
- AIADMK 172 seats
- BJP 33 seats (down from 20 in 2021, more aggressive NDA allocation)
- PMK 18 seats
NDA combined wins: AIADMK 47 + BJP 1 + PMK 4 = 52 seats. The NDA had projected 100+ at one point. The shortfall came from TVK absorbing votes that would historically have gone to NDA candidates in anti-DMK swing seats.
What AIADMK lost vs what they gained ​
- Lost 26 to TVK: mostly Chennai metro suburbs + western TN where TVK wave was strongest
- Lost 15 to DMK: where DMK's compact-machine campaigning held, even with reduced share
- Gained 22 from DMK: in seats where AIADMK candidates were locally strong and TVK was weak
The net effect: AIADMK kept its core (~22 retentions) and is essentially the third party in TN 2026's three-party structure. They went from #2 (66 seats) to #3 (47) — overtaken by TVK.
What this means going forward ​
- EPS as AIADMK leader has personal-brand authority (98K margin)
- But party-wide retention is fragile (22 of 66 = 33%)
- Coalition arithmetic with BJP and PMK didn't help
- Likely 2031 AIADMK strategy: rebuild on EPS's brand + try to reclaim Vanniyar/Kongunadu/Thevar voters from TVK
